Sir John McNee was regius professor of the practice of medicine in the University of Glasgow from 1936-1953. During World War I he made important and pathological observations on chlorine poisoning, gas gangarine, war nephritis and trench fever. Following the war his reputation as a leading authority on diseases of the liver was consolidated by numerous publications.

His tenure of the Glasgow chair was interupted by World War II, during which he served as a consulting physician to the Royal Navy. His main achievements include the birth of the Gardiner Institute of Medicine, his part authorship of the Textbook of Medical Treatment and his role in the formation of the Scottish Society for Experimental Medicine.
