Scope and Content

Ernest Charles Jones was arrested for making a seditious speech on 6 June 1848 and was sentenced to two years in Westminster House of Correction, Tothill Fields. The conditions in the prison were harsh, and two of his fellow Chartist prisoners died of cholera. Jones refused to pick oakum and was punished by being placed in solitary confinement (see A.0.10 no. 3/10). It is believed that his health was permanently damaged during this period.
