Album of photographs, etc. of a tour, 1876.

This photographic album was taken by an unknown photographer and donated to Glasgow University Library by Sir Denis William Brogan, who was a British Historian and Political Scientist. Brogan was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1900 and was educated at Rutherglen Academy, the University of Glasgow (MA, 1923), and Balliol College, Oxford. He went on to study for a year at Harvard on a Rockefeller research fellowship. He held the position of professor of Political Science at Cambridge from 1939-1968 . He also worked at University College, London, London School of Economics, (1928-1934) and Corpus Christi College, Oxford. During World War Two, Brogan worked for the Foreign Research and Press Service, the American Division of the Ministry of Information, Political Warfare Executive and the overseas services of the BBC. Brogan is best known as an interpreter of American History and politics for British readers. He was knighted in 1963. In addition to many honorary doctorates from France and the United States, he was an honorary LLD of Glasgow (1946) and honorary DLitt of Oxford (1969). He was any honorary fellow of Peterhouse and Corpus Christi and became a fellow of the British Academy in 1955. His published works include: The American Political System (1933), Politics and Law in the United States (1941), The Era of Franklin D. Roosevelt (1950), America in the Modern World (1960), American Aspects (1964), Worlds in Conflict (1967).
