Scope and Content

Personal and professional letters to Duncan Grant. Also includes a small number of letters from Duncan Grant, and letters to members of his family or close friends.

Arrangement

Duncan Grant's correspondence was sorted by Quentin Bell after his death. On accession by the archive, the letters were mostly arranged in bundles by name, labelled in Quentin Bell's handwriting. Some had annotations in Duncan Grant's handwriting as well. There were also a small number of mixed files, mostly containing relatively early material. The letters have been catalogued alphabetically by sender. Where a bundle of letters from a named individual also contained letters from or to other people, these have been kept in the same place if there has been any discernable connection, otherwise they have been deemed to be misfiled and have been replaced in the alphabetical sequance. The mixed files have been split up and included in the sequence, for ease of reference, but where the files were labelled this label has been noted in the catalogue entry. Unidentified correspondents have been placed at the end of the alphabetical sequence, followed by two subject files for correspondence on the death of Vanessa Bell and on Duncan Grant's 90th birthday.
