Correspondence

This series comprises loose incoming correspondence of the vice-chancellor Hopkinson, and some copy correspondence of F.E. Weiss dating from 1913-1914. The great majority of the correspondence dates after 1906. A wide variety of correspondents are present including members of University staff, staff at other universities, government ministers, local dignitaries including members of Council, former students, as well as more ephemeral material concerning invitations to social functions and requests to join local and national societies. Topics of interest include discussions relating to proposed reductions of the Government grant to universities in 1907, letters relating to appointment to chairs in Greek, engineering and medical subjects, departmental teaching arrangements and University buildings. A short summary is given of each letter.

The original arrangement of this material is not known, but it is likely that the material was arranged alphabetically by correspondent. A previous arrangement followed this form. This arrangement has been retained, except where an item has obviously been mis-filed. Each correspondent is treated as an item; where there is more than one letter from a correspondent, these have been treated as a bundle, and the constituent letters as pieces.
