Joseph Whistler Revillon was born in 1886 and was the great-nephew of the painter James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903). He spent his early life as a civil engineer in Russia. When he retired to Suffolk, England, in the 1940s he began work on a catalogue of Whistler's oil paintings amassing in addition a considerable body of material relating to the Whistler family. He bequeathed the whole of his collection to the University of Glasgow, Scotland, where after another 25 years of work his catalogue he began was published.
