Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Undeb Gweithwyr Môn, subsequently the Anglesey Workers' Union, was established in Llangefni in 1909 and officially registered as a trade union on 17th August 1911. It was dedicated to promote the interests of the Anglesey rural working class. The Union strove to seek direct representation on public bodies, to help workers in matters of compensation, annuities etc., to provide financial assistance in cases of unemployment, sickness, accident or death, and guidance on finding employment. By the end of January 1921, 20 branches had been established, each with its local committee; the majority of members were farm workers. It created further branches but began to lose potential recruits to rival bodies. In June 1918, it was resolved that Undeb Gweithwyr Môn should join with the Anglesey Workers' Union, on the understanding that its identity would be retained. Forty-six branches were absorbed into the Workers' Union. The executive committee of Undeb Gweithwyr Môn was allowed to operate as the district committee of the Workers' Union. On 12th May 1922, Undeb Gweithwyr Môn decided to cancel its registration as a trade union. The Aberffraw branch, the first formed, remained in existence into the 1980s.
