Scope and Content

This collection primarily comprises documents relating to the Norton and Enock families of Sibford Gower, along with further material touching on Oxfordshire Quakers, including copies of births, marriages and deaths recorded in the Banbury Monthly Meeting and a book of poems attributed to Quaker poet Thomas Ellwood.

John Enock (1767-1841) was descended from the Enock family of Radway, Warwickshire and the Norton family of Sibford Gower. He married Elizabeth (née French) and took up the trade of wheelwright in Sibford Gower, apprenticed to his grandfather John Norton, a trade later taken up by his own son John (1795-1855). His second son Ezra Enock (1799-1860) became a watchmaker. Ezra married first Eliza Harris and after her death, Ann Prophett, with whom he had three children. Ezra's grandaughter Mary Ann Enock (1867-1921) married Dilworth Abbatt (1861-1942), author of 'Quaker Annals of Preston and the Fylde' and relocated to Lancashire.

The records were passed down to the Abbatt family and were deposited as accessions 117 and 118 in 1948.

Formerly catalogued under reference 'A' and recatalogued by Katherine Kinrade in December 2020.
