Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Coats Germany began in 1768, when Carl Christian Mez was established as a silk ribbon weaver in Kandern. His sons joined the business in 1785, creating the company Carl Mez & Sons. In the 1930s, J & P Coats Ltd took over the business, re-branding it Mez Ag. The company's operations were disrupted by both World Wars. The company now operates under the name Coats Germany. The company merged with Opti, Reissverschlüsse in 1989 before becoming Coats GmbH in 1997, and Coats Germany in 1998.
