Administrative / Biographical History

Augustus Montague Toplady (1740-1778) was a Church of England clergyman and hymn-writer. From 1768 he was the incumbent of Broad Hembury, Devon. His polemical writings were suffused with Calvanism and attacks on John Wesley. He also wrote hymns and verses, writing Rock of ages (1775), Poems on sacred subjects (1759), and Psalms and hymns for public and private worship (1776).
