Scope and Content

Currently only the editorial papers from the first two accessions of the archive have been catalogued in detail (CPA/1/1-2), and the extent of the material stated above reflects only this portion of the archive. The core of the editorial papers is the sequence of 'book files', which contain any mixture or all of: the author's, editor's or translator's original manuscript; author's proofs; collated proofs; manuscript material which was not selected for publication; and related papers such as correspondence. The files therefore document the whole pre-history of a volume, including the authorial emendations and revisions, and editorial changes which shaped a published text. The material catalogued so far relates to 215 Carcanet publications which appeared during the period 1969-1981, and therefore documents fully the development of the list during its first 12 years. There are also 'magazine files' which contain equivalent manuscript and proof material relating to the magazines associated with Carcanet Press, including: one issue of the early magazine Carcanet, from which the Press grew; all six issues of Poetry Nation; and most issues of PN Review which appeared in the period leading up to 1981. There is also a small number of rejected manuscripts which were not selected for publication by the Press. Much more detail about the content of the editorial papers and the process of editing and publication is given at lower levels in this catalogue.

Arrangement

In accordance with the principles of arrangement outlined at collection level, the editorial papers have been arranged into subgroups based on the accession in which they came to the Library, meaning that currently only two subgroups have been fully catalogued, as follows:

  • CPA/1/1 Editorial Papers from Accession 1
  • CPA/1/2 Editorial Papers from Accession 2
.

Within these subgroups material has been arranged into series based on file type.
