This is the largest collection of Kay-Shuttleworth papers in public hands. The papers originally came from Gawthorpe Hall and were listed as being from a deed box belonging to Sir James Phillips Kay-Shuttleworth. The papers consist of correspondence to and from Kay-Shuttleworth and others, comprising some eleven hundred letters, manuscripts, and printed papers (chiefly in the form of pamphlets published by Kay-Shuttleworth). An outline list of these papers, A Handlist of the Papers in the deed box of Sir James Phillips Kay-Shuttleworth, was produced by B.C. Bloomfield, Librarian for the College of St Mark and St John in Chelsea, London, at the request of the then Vice Principal, Hugh M. Pollard. The list was published by the College of St Mark and St John in 1961 as part of a series of Occasional Papers (No.2).
