Letters of Mrs Linnæus Banks

Scope and Content

Letters from Isabella Banks, perhaps better known as Mrs Linnæus Banks (author of The Manchester Man and other works), to William Andrews of Hull (1848-1908). They relate to personal, antiquarian and, predominantly, literary affairs. Andrews was an antiquarian scholar and lover of literature, who became the first secretary of Hull Literary Club, founded in 1879 (see the collection-level description of the Hull Literary Club archive at Hull University Archives: http://www.a2a.org.uk/html/050-dlc.htm). Andrews wrote many works of local history in his Bygone series (Bygone Cheshire, Bygone Lincolnshire etc.), as well as books on church history, the history of criminal justice and punishment, folklore, etc. These were published by William Andrews & Co., the Hull Press.
