Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The Club appears to have been established in the late 1940s or early 1950s, and had an association with the College of Domestic Economy (later known as Elizabeth Gaskell College), which was located in Hathersage Road, Manchester. From 1976 to 1984, its official title was "The University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology and the City of Manchester College of Higher Education Union joint hiking and hostelling club"; it sometimes used the acronym TCHHC (i.e. Tech and College Hiking and Hostelling Club"). The City of Manchester College of Higher Education (Comanche) had been set up in 1976 as a unified teacher training college by Manchester city council, and was based at the former College of Domestic Economy.
In 1983/4, the College of Higher Education became part of Manchester Polytechnic, and it appears its students then left the Club. From 1984 to 1990, the Club was known as the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology Camping, Hiking and Hostelling Club, and so was able to retain its existing acronym (TCHHC). In 1990 the Club was renamed the "UMIST Hiking Club, and there was a further change of name in 1998 when it became the UMIST Hiking and Mountaineering Club. The Club promoted interest in hiking and arranged regular meetings and events in the North West and beyond. The Club also played an important part in organising the annual Bogle Stroll. The Club was part of the UMIST Students Union.
The University of Manchester Hiking Society was descended from the University of Manchester Walking Club, set u p in 1935. this was later discontinued, but a Hiking Society was reconstituted in the early 1960s. The Hiking Society and UMISYT Hiking Club merged in 2004 on the creation of the new University of Manchester.
