Sam Gamble Scholarships Records

The archive comprises a minute book of the Trustees, plus two account books recording payment of scholarship funds.

Sam Gamble (d.1922) was a businessman, the Manchester representative of a Sheffield steel firm, Moss and Gamble Brothers Ltd. In 1916 he endowed the Sam Gamble scholarships for women medical students at the University of Manchester to the sum of £5000. He was the father of Mercier Gamble, a doctor who had trained at Owens College, and became a specialist in tropical medicine.

The Scholarships were open to women students preparing for the degree of M.B./Ch.B. of the University. They were tenable for one year, but renewable for up to five years. The scholarships were worth up to £40 per annum. Awards were administered by a board of trustees.

The collection is open to any accredited reader.
