Much of this files is concerned with the development of a national register of home parenteral nutrition patients. Irving established the register in 1977 to collect data on parenteral feeding schemes run by various UK hospitals to support further research. Initially the register focussed on the North west of England but by the early 1980s had become a national register. Topics include: arrangements for creating a patient information database, and there is also correspondence with other clinicians working in this field, including Maurice Shils of the New York Academy of Medicine about their register, Harry Lee St Mary's Hospital Portsmouth, John Lennard Jones, St Mark's Hospital London, and Professor H A Lee University of Southampton. The file includes a report on the register between 1977-83.
