Boards of Studies were constituted primarily to oversee the co-ordination of academic policy for subjects or students where more than one Faculty or Department had interests. The Boards therefore operated in areas where no single Faculty had jurisdiction. Boards normally reported directly to the University of Manchester Senate.
Although some Boards were set up in the 1960s, they were explicitly recognised in Statute XIII of the revised Charter of 1973. A number of Boards were subsequently established including: Awards in Affiliated Colleges (later Institutions, thereafter Validation) 1974-2004; Extra-Mural Studies (later Continuing Education 1974-1998); Child Studies, 1976-1985; Diploma in Youth Work 1961-1968; Speech Therapy and Pathology, 1974-1999; Science and Technology Policy 1990-1996; Oncology, 1969-1985; Biochemistry 1969-1985; Media Studies 1984-1994; and Information Technology 1983-1992. By the late 1990s most Boards had been wound up.
Some internal Faculty committees also used the title of Board of Studies; they are not included in this archive.
