Scope and Content

The Library Expansion Project was a major building project of the 1980s, funded by the UGC. The outcome was the refurbished Joule Library opened by the Duke of Edinburgh on 4 December 1987. This added over 50% space to the Library floor plan, with provision of over 500 reader spaces. The architects for the project were Building Design Partnership (BDP), Manchester. Concurrently with the building project ('Expansion plan'), the Library drew up a development plan, which was a broader plan for the development of services in the new building.
