Papers of Josephine Reynolds relating to Thomas Coglan Horsfall and town planning

This subfonds contains correspondence, notes and published and printed materials collected by Josephine Reynolds in connection with her thesis research into Thomas Coglan Horsfall's interest in town planning.

Josephine Preston Reynolds (1919-1997) was one of a small number of women working as a professional within the town planning sector, predominantly in an academic role. She completed a BArch in 1943 and a Diploma in civic design in 1944 at the University of Liverpool. After graduation she took a job at Neston Urban District Council helping the council prepare for post-war suburban development. In 1946 she joined the Department of Civic Design at the University of Liverpool, initially as a temporary teaching assistant, which led to a full-time post and an academic career. She was a professional member of the Town Planning Institute (TPI) and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), and was closely associated with the Town Planning Review as both an editor and contributor. Thomas Coglan Horsfall was the subject of her 1953 MA thesis, specifically his advocacy for the application of German ideas on town planning to Great Britain. As part of her research she visited Germany, with the aid of a Hunt Bursary from the RIBA.
