Original correspondence (55 items) mostly relating to applications for assistance, addressed to George Townshend, 4th Viscount [later 1st Marquess] Townshend, as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland (1767-1772), with a number of memoranda in his hand. No. 19 is a letter from Hardwicke to Townshend respecting the Commission of the Peace for Norfolk, 12 September 1747, and No. 37 is a letter to Townshend from his son at Eton, 25 October 1778.
There are also typescript copies (90 items) of personal letters written between 1773 and 1781, from George Townshend, 1st Marquess to Ann Montgomery, his second wife, with a typescript letter from T.S. Blakeney of the Friends of the National Libraries to the Librarian of the John Rylands Library concerning these copies, 28 May 1962.
