Scope and Content

A very miscellaneous collection of notes made by Hird. It is difficult in some cases to differentiate between Hird's essays and articles and his notes, some of which appear to be draft or preliminary sketches of ideas he developed into longer essays. Some of the notes relate to specific areas of interest e.g. gambling, religion, while others are more general and include musings, observations quotations, notes of books read. There was also a less than complete dividing line between Hird's diaries (HIR/2) and these notes. Some notebooks contain a mixture of diary entries and more general notation. In some cases, notes were kept in distinct bundles or folders, but the majority of notes seem to have been mixed together with no obvious ordering system. The arrangement of material is largely based on the bundles of documents received by the Library.
