Two letters from Roscoe to Sydney Hickson (professor of zoology, University of Manchester, 1894-1926) concerning the British Association meeting in Manchester in September 1915. /1 letter dated 30 July 1915, Roscoe stresses need to have leading scientists present, and refers to "some intrigues... on foot against Schuster". Sir Arthur Schuster, formerly professor of physics at Manchester, was president of the Manchester BA meeting, and had been subjected to criticism from anti-German agitators; /2 29 August 1915 refers to his doubts about a public announcement about the meeting. Enclosed is a small handbill protesting against Schuster's presidency of the meeting (it is not known if this was originally sent with either of the letters).
