Scope and Content

Significant items include letters from famous poets with whom Dyson worked closely for many years, in particular a number from R.S. Thomas but also Thom Gunn and Ted Hughes. There are also a number inscribed first editions of poetry collections by these authors. In addition there are letters from politicians, poets, literary critics and academics including Roy Jenkins, Harold MacMillan, Frank Kermode, Philip Larkin and Muriel Spark.

Administrative / Biographical History

Brian Cox and Tony Dyson met as undergraduates at Pembroke College, Oxford, in the early 1950s. They founded Critical Quarterly in 1959 and worked on it together for many years. These papers were received directly from Cox, who had selected them from Dyson's estate in 2002.
