Scope and Content

Twelve notebooks containing William Farrer's notes on honors and knights' fees. The volumes contain many blank pages (not included in the foliation above), and many loose notes are inserted between the pages. The contents of eleven books comprise:

  • (i) Wahull of Odell (Bedfordshire), Chokes of Wollaston (Northamptonshire), Bidun of Lavendon (Buckinghamshire), Visdelou of Benham (Berkshire) and Chester;
  • (ii) Chester, Curcy of Stoke Curcy (Somerset) and Spalding priory charters;
  • (iii) Peverel of Nottingham, Huntingdon, Eudes the sewer (Colchester), Giffard and Bolebec;
  • (iv) Arsic and Warenne;
  • (v) Wallingford;
  • (vi) Various southern counties;
  • (vii) The abbey of St. Edmund, etc.;
  • (viii) Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, etc.;
  • (ix) Various counties;
  • (x) De Lacy family, etc.;
  • (xi) Various genealogical notes, etc.
The material in notebooks (i)-(xi) was evidently gathered by Farrer in the course of preparing Honors and knights' fees, Volumes I-II (London: printed for the author by Spottiswoode, Ballantyne, 1923-4), and Volume III (Manchester: Manchester University Press, 1925). The other notebook (xii) has on the flyleaf MS. penes O. & J. Folds, Burnley and contains transcripts of documents concerning the lord lieutenancy of Lancashire and Cheshire and the raising of trained bands between 1585 and 1589.
