Scope and Content

The last volume of the Heinrich Simon papers differs in appearance as well as content from the previous volumes. In contrast to volumes one to seven the simple paper binding of volume eight, with its damaged front cover and spine, contains a collection of miscellaneous printed items referring to the years 1823 to 1834 and an extensive diary of Heinrich Simon. The chronological order of the former volumes is absent, but the material can be related to events in Heinrich Simon's life. In addition, there is a handwritten page (40).

The most interesting item in this volume is a book entitled "Sammel, summel, surium-Buch" ("Hotch-Potch", or Commonplace Book), including chronologically-arranged notes and jottings of a miscellaneous character by Heinrich Simon, e.g. diary entries, time planning, notes relating to his studies and a map (see p. 96), as well as short essay-like writings, amplified by several notes from other people, e.g. statements, sayings and mottos, covering the time from August 1826 to March 1833 (54). The book consists of 276 pages and contains on separate sheets at p. 33 a motto written by Heinrich Simon, dated 15 Mar 1834 (54a), at p. 157 a note referring to p. 177 (54c), and at p.241 a farewell letter to his family including his last orders, for example talking about his completely ruined chest ("total ruinierte Brust"), dated 18 Jun 1831 (54b). The printed material covering the years from 1823 to 1834 consists of papers, journals, pages from small books or booklets, cuttings and other small pieces of printed matter relating to certain periods, interests and events in Heinrich Simon's life. For example, four pieces relate to legal subjects: 34, 36, 37 deal with the legal procedure concerning duels, and 35 concerns a mother's guardianship of her children. Several of the printed papers contain handwritten notes or remarks.

The remaining books, booklets and papers include pieces such as cuttings (1, 2, 30a, 39a, 40a, 42, 50); single sheets and incomplete documents (6, 7, 21, 23-29, 44, 48); about students (3); concerning comedy (4); G.C. Kirchmaier on language (5); concerning the education of children (38); Kunst- Blatt (Art Paper), no. 35, 1 May 1834 (20), no. 36, 6 May 1834 (8), no. 37, 8 May 1834 (9), no. 38, 13 May 1834 (10), no. 54, 8 Jul 1834 (15), no. 55, 10 Jul 1834 (16), no. 56, 15 Jul 1834 (14), no. 102, 23 Dec 1834 (11), no. 103, 25 Dec 1834 (12), and no. 104, 30 Dec 1834 (13), and some incomplete issues (17-19, 22); Der Gesellschafter oder Blätter für Geist und Herz (Papers for Mind and Heart), no. 182, 14 Nov 1823 (30), no. 183, 15 Nov 1823 (31), no. 208, 29 Dec 1823 (32), and no. 209, 31 Dec 1823 (33); Blätter für literarische Unterhaltung (Papers for Literary Entertainment), no. 235, 23 Aug 1830, including news from Paris at the end of July 1830 (39), and no. 291, 17 Oct 1832 (41); Morgenblatt för gebildete Stände (Morning Paper for the educated classes), no. 15, 17 Jan 1827, containing an article on the English nobility (43); Leipziger Literatur-Zeitung (Leipzig Literature Paper), no. 87, 11 Apr 1832 (49); Börne Literatur-Blatt (Literature Paper), no. 121, 28 Nov 1831 (51), and no. 122, 2 Dec 1831 (52); Der Eremit.
