185 letters addressed to Gray from friends and acquaintances. Many are from contemporary artists, writers, literary critics and academics, and a large proportion concern literary works and criticism. The letters also include news of friends and family and descriptions of everyday life. A small number of letters are concerned solely with sourcing examples of children's toys for the exhibition arranged by Gray in 1907; these have been arranged as a separate series. However, the Toy Exhibition is mentioned in some of Gray's other correspondence, notably in Gray's letters to his niece, Coralie Tinklar (JHG/2/3), and letters received from A.C. Haddon (JHG/1/1/22/4).
