University of Manchester School of Modern Languages Archive

The archive comprises the minutes of the senior School committee, the Board (SML/1), the Policy and Resources Committee (SML/2), Undergraduate programmes (SML/3), Graduates Studies (SML/4), Langauge centre Baord (SML/5), and the Centre for Transation and Intercultural Studies (SML/6), which was originally a UMIST unit.

The School of Modern Languages had administrative responsibility for the University's modern European language subjects from the mid-1980s until 2004. Originally known as the School of Language Studies, the establishment of the School reflected the University's changing approach to academic administration in the 1980s, based on closer coordination of departments in similar subject areas. Schools formed a middle tier of administration between faculties and departments and took over some responsibilities for academic and financial planning. Apart from modern languages, schools were established for English and Linguistics; Music and Drama; Middle Eastern Studies, Religions and Theology; and History and Classics.

The School of Modern Lanaguages comprised the departments of French, German, Spanish and Portuguese, Russian and Italian as well as the Language Centre. On the creation of the new University of Manchester in 2004, the School's responsibilities were transferred to the new School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures.

Most of the records in this archive are currently subject to access restrictions. Some items will be closed and other material will be subject to review by the archivist before specific access conditions are decided.

The collection includes material which is subject to the Data Protection Act 1998. Under Section 33 of the Data Protection Act 1998 (DPA), The University of Manchester Library (UML) holds the right to process personal data for research purposes. The Data Protection (Processing of Sensitive Personal Data) Order 2000 enables the UML to process sensitive personal data for research purposes. In accordance with the DPA, UML has made every attempt to ensure that all personal and sensitive personal data has been processed fairly, lawfully and accurately. Users of the archive are expected to comply with the Data Protection Act 1998, and will be required to sign a form acknowledging that they will abide by the requirements of the Act in any further processing of the material by themselves.

Open parts of this collection, and the catalogue descriptions, may contain personal data about living individuals. Some items in this collection may be closed to public inspection in line with the requirements of the DPA. Restrictions/closures of specific items will be indicated in the catalogue.
