The archive is a collection of items relating to the Sutcliffe family of Stalybridge, between 1857 and 1909. It is separated into two sub-fonds, documents relating to William Sutcliffe, and those of his son, John.
It consists of a range of sources including letters, photographs, newspaper cuttings and diaries. The diary and handwritten notes in particular are uncommon. This is official correspondence relating to William Sutcliffe's appointment as a certifying factory surgeon, and John's papers include correspondence with his mother during his visit to Egypt in 1878-79.
The archive provides useful material relating to individuals in the medical profession during the nineteenth century. It provides insight into career progression for such individuals, as well as details of their medical knowledge and efforts to expand this.
