Scope and Content

This finely-bound calligraphic volume contains pedigrees recording the ancestry of Charles Dauntesey Langley Greenhalgh (1856-1942), lord of the manor of Mellor in Derbyshire. The volume was originally compiled around 1910, incorporating a large Greenhalgh armorial containing the motto 'Virtus sola invicta' (on f. vii), a pedigree of Charles Dauntesey Langley Greenhalgh's immediate ancestors and descendants, and numerous pedigrees of related families (see below). There are 38 medium-sized coats of arms and 31 small coats of arms.

The volume contains pedigrees and coats of arms of the following families: Dauntesey of West Lavington, Wiltshire; Gatacre of Gatacre, Shropshire; Burley of Burley, Shropshire; Bostock of Bostock, Cheshire; Brereton of Brereton, Cheshire; Sandbach of Sandbach, Cheshire; Vernon of Shipbrook, Cheshire; Venables of Kinderton, Cheshire; Radclyffe [Radcliffe] of Ordsall, Lancashire; Holland of Staventon, Lincolnshire; Fitton of Bollin, Cheshire; Roter of Thornton, Cheshire; Hellesby [Helsby] of Helsby, Cheshire; Langley of Agecroft, Lancashire; Davenport of Bramhall, Cheshire; Leigh [Legh] of Adlington, Cheshire; Trafford of Trafford, Cheshire; Savage of Clifton, Cheshire; Stanley of Stourton and Hooton, Cheshire; Goushill; Fitzalan, Earls of Arundel; Albini, Earls of Sussex; Lords Mortimer of Wigmore; de Warenne, Earls of Surrey; Charlemagne, King of France and his heirs; de Bohun, Earls of Hereford and Earls of Essex; Badlesmere of Badlesmere, Kent; and de Clare, Earls of Hereford and Earls of Gloucester.

The pedigree of Charles Dauntesey Langley Greenhalgh was continued on ff. 60-61, recording that he and his wife Hannah had six children, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren. These additions appear to have been made in c.1965.

A single A4 sheet containing a printed continuation of the Green family tree down to 2021 is loosely inserted in the volume. It was presented to the Library by Mr (Herbert Charles) Brian Green, great grandson of Charles Dauntesey Langley Greenhalgh, and his wife Pamela in November 2022.
