Scope and Content

In May 1940 Auchinleck replaced Maj.-Gen. Pierse Mackesy as Commander of the Anglo-French land and air forces in northern Norway. His troops held and expanded their position at Narvik, but had to be withdrawn when the rapid German advance through Western Europe necessitated the evacuation of Dunkirk and cut off planned reinforcements for Norway. Papers include correspondence, messages, reports, operational orders and memoranda. The final two items (AUC/68-69) are detailed reports by Auchinleck on the Norway campaign.
