Administrative / Biographical History

Walter Clarkson Henderson was born in Motherwell in 1908. His father was James Henderson, an insurance agent. Walter was educated at Dalziel High School, Motherwell and left there in 1923. He began an arts degree at Glasgow University in 1926 aged 18, taking classes in Latin and Greek. During the course of the next two academic years he continued his studies in Latin and Greek as well as Roman History, English and Philosophy. He was a distinguished student gaining certificates of distinction in Latin in 1927 and 1930 as well as Roman History in 1928. In addition he achieved first class certificates for Greek in 1927 and English in 1928. He graduated with an MA (first class honours) in Latin and Greek in November 1930. He went on to become a teacher and was headmaster c.1970. He was also rector of Airdrie Academy. He died on the 24th January 1984.
