Administrative / Biographical History

Edith Hill Wilson ( 1893-1977  ) attended the University of Glasgow from 1910-1914  and graduated with an MA in French and German in 1914  . She also took courses in English and Geology, and studied in Goslar am Harz, Germany , during the summer of 1913  (UGC 074/2/4 provides a timetable of her studies in Germany). Edith won the following prizes: Miss Wilson

  • 1910-1911, French Language and Literature, ordinary class: 2nd prize and the silver medal offered by the Alliance française of Paris;
  • 1910-1911, German Language and Literature, ordinary class (at Queen Margaret College): first equal;
  • 1911-1912, German Language and Literature, higher and honours class (first year): first prize and first class certificate;
  • 1911-1912, English Language and Literature, ordinary class: 1st class certificate;
  • 1912-1913, French Language and Literature, junior division: 1st class certificate;
  • 1913-1914, French Language and Literature, honours class: History of Poetry prizes – 1st equal 'Texts' prizes: 1st equal First class certificate;
  • 1913-1914, German Language and Literature, honours class: 1st prize and 1st class certificate.
is listed in the General Council Register as a student from 1915-1922  with a Glasgow address, and appears in 1923  as a teacher. Miss Wilson did not marry, and taught for many years in Tillicoultry, Clackmannanshire , where she died on 29 August 1977  at the age of 84. Her papers consist of student lecture notes, essays and essay notes for French, German and English Literature classes at the University of Glasgow and, by the dates, during her time in Germany .
