Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Christian Melville Fleming was born in 1896 in Motherwell, Scotland. She matriculated into the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Glasgow in 1910. In her first year she studied Zoology, Chemistry, Anatomy and Practical Anatomy. In her second year she studied Anatomy and Physiology. Her third year subjects consisted of Materia Medica, Pathology and Clinical Surgery. In her fourth year she studied Medicine, Surgery, Midwifery and Clinical Medicine. In her final year she studied Clinical Medicine and Surgery. During this period she gained awards in Botany and Practical Examination (1916-1917); Medicine and Therapeutics (1917-1918); and other Practice of Medicine and Clinical Medicine (1918-1919)
She graduated MB ChB in 1920 and entered into a career as a hospital physician at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary. By 1962 she had achieved a diploma of membership of the Royal Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow After employment in London as a University Reader, 1964-1965, Christian Fleming returned to live in Bothwell until her death in 1976.
