Administrative / Biographical History

According to an entry by W Crombie, Club President, in Glasgow University Magazine for 1945-1946 "it was in 1938, that a small group of 'Varsity students met on the top of Ben Narnairn, and with much cheering and quaffing of ginger beer decided to form the G U Mountaineering Club, without office-bearers or subscriptions. This anarchial society was brought to a close when the GUMC [Glasgow University Mountaineering Club] was formally constituted in 1940. Since that momentous day, its members have clambered , wrestled, and struggled with heather, snow and rock (not to mention with each other on rainy days) in every climbing district in Great Britain." An entry for the Club first appeared in the University of Glasgow Student Handbook in the academic year 1942-1943 . This mentions a mid-term "meet" to be held at Arrochar. The subsequent year's entry invites beginners to join the Club, and mentions activities such as rock and snow climbing, hill walking and lantern lectures. The Honorary President then was Archibald C Pickles. There was also an annual subscription fee. The magazines in this collection show that these outdoor group activities, known as "meets", became regular events for the society, taking place at various locations. The Glasgow University Mountaineering Club still holds regular meets and other social events.
