Administrative / Biographical History

Glasgow University Economic History Club was formed c1965  at the University of Glasgow to host talks from guest speakers and hold social events where staff and students could meet informally. Membership was open to all students of the University. A committee consisting of an honorary president, two, or sometimes three, honorary vice presidents, president, treasurer and secretary managed the club. The constitution was amended in 1970  to include the appointment of a social convenor and four ordinary members. Sidney Checkland , Professor of Economic History at the University of Glasgow, acted as honorary president in 1965  . From c1970 the club held joint meetings with the Adam Smith Club . Talks included Canada in the Reign of Queen Victoria , Stalin and the Peasants , Capital Formation in the Industrial Revolution and Illicit Whisky Making in the Highlands . In 1974, the club had a membership of 100 including Sir Alec Cairncross , Chancellor of University of Glasgow. In 2002, the club continued to meet.
