Lilian Carmichael (nèe Campbell), was born on the 8 April 1924  in Dunoon, Argyll, the daughter of Duncan Campbell, a master mariner, and Mary Boyd MacFarlane. She was educated at Dunoon Grammar School from 1929-1943. She attended the University of Glasgow from 1943-1950, graduating with an M.A (Phil./Econ.) in 1946  and an LLB in 1949  . During her time at University she took classes in Political Economy, Social Econmoy, and Moral Philosophy. She was Secretary of the Glasgow University Philosophical Society, Glasgow University Christian Union, and Glasgow University Juridical Society.

As well completing the LLB after graduating with the MA, Lilian Carmichael returned in 1949-1950 to undertake classes in Public Finance, Constitutional History, and Social Economic History for a Public Administration diploma. After her graduation she also took some non-graduating classes in Conveyancing and Private International Law, which were a further requirement of The Law Society of Scotland, and became a qualified solicitor in 1950. She worked as a solicitor at Kidstons & Co. Writers, Glasgow from 1950-1951 and and as a Carnegie Research Scholar in the University of Leiden, the Hague Academy of International Law, and the Peace Palace Library from 1951-1953. She then returned to Kidstons & Co. Writers, Glasgow and worked as a solicitor from 1953-1955.

She married William Carmichael, a professional conservationist, on the 11 April 1955 and relocated to East Africa with him in the mid 1950s. From 1960-1969 she was Assistant Mistress in The Aga Khan's School in Mwanza, Tanganyika (now Tanzania) and the Uyui Secondary School in Tabora, Tanganyika (now Tanzania). She was also a newspaper correspondent for the Tanganyika Standard, the East African Standard, and the Uganda Argus. She returned to Scotland c1969 and in 1970 became a lecturer in Company Law and Scots Business Law at Napier University, Edinburgh. She retained this post until 1994.
