Alexandra Janetta Kirkwood was born on 7 June 1926 in Saltcoats, Scotland. Her father was James Douglas Kirkwood, a headmaster. She matriculated into the arts faculty at the University of Glasgow in 1943. In her first year she studied Latin, French and German at Ordinary level. She studied French and German at Higher level and Moral Philosophy at Ordinary level in her second year. She went on in her third year to study English and Geology at Ordinary level and French at Intermediate level. She graduated with an MA Ordinary in the summer of 1946. Throughout her time at the University she also received an Education Authority Grant from Ayrshire. She became a teacher, and died in 2001.
