Administrative / Biographical History

The Glasgow University Early Twenties Club was formed following a proposal for its formation made at the Final Year Medical Dinner in 1924. It was formed for the benefit of those men who graduated, or intended to graduate, or who attended classes in any session during the years 1919-1924. The function of the Club was to hold a dinner once a year, usually in mid-February, although this failed to happen during the war years, and a dinner for ex-presidents was also held annually. The President was chosen by rotation from the different Faculties of the University of Glasgow. The Club performed a useful function in that it made possible for those who attended classes in the strenuous days immediately after the war to meet again and renew the old friendships of their student days. Meetings were held at Glasgow University Union and an annual circular was produced for members. Due to the inevitable decline in membership, the annual dinner eventually became a lunch and the club closed in 1992. A small plaque in the dining room of the Union denotes that the early Twenties Club met there.
