John Mackean Maxton was born in Glasgow on 24 March 1896  . His father, Archibald Maxton, was a designer. John studied medicine at the University of Glasgow from 1914-1920  and was awarded first class certificates for Pathology and Physiology in 1917, and Diseases of the Throat and Nose in 1918. He graduated with an MBChB in April 1920  . After completing his terms as House Physician at Glasgow Royal Infirmary and House Surgeon at Clayton Hospital, Wakefield, John set up practice in Maryhill, Glasgow and then West Cardonald, Glasgow. He died in Glasgow on 16 January 1980  .
