Administrative / Biographical History
Alexander Deuchar, 1848-1913 , was a brother of brewers James Deuchar and Robert Deuchar, who were based at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England. The family came originally from Forfarshire, Scotland. Alexander Deuchar was "involved in the licensed trade and owned a number of public houses in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, including the Westmoreland Arms."
In c1907 he combined with Messrs Reid, Laing and Higginbottom, who also appear to have been involved in the licensed trade, in order to receive a greater discount from brewers William McEwan & Co Ltd, Edinburgh, Scotland. In 1907 he also received a loan of £10,000 from William McEwan & Co Ltd on a first mortgage on the Scotia.
By 1922 three of the company's licensed premises in Newcastle-upon-Tyne - the Victoria Hotel, the Clock and the Queen Victoria - were rented from James Deuchar Ltd, Sunderland, England and Montrose, Scotland. Scottish Brewers Ltd acquired 9000 shares in the company in the 1930s and another 10,000 in 1946, with the remainder acquired in 1953. Scottish Brewers merged with Newcastle Breweries Ltd , Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England , in 1960 and changed its name to Scottish & Newcastle Breweries Ltd .
