Duncan Kennedy Douglas Mackay was born in Rutherglen, Lanarkshire, on 12 November 1909 . His father, Alexander Mackay was a bank agent. Duncan attended the University of Glasgow from 1927-1933 , taking classes in History and German in his first year; German (Higher), Political Economy and Geography in his second; Logic and Constitutional Law in his third; Civil Law and Forensic Medicine in his fourth; Jurisprudence and Scots Law in his fifth year, and Conveyancing in his sixth and final year. He graduated with an MA in June 1930 and an LLB in November 1932 , and subsequently worked as a solicitor. He died in Girvan on the 13 November 1996.
