Administrative / Biographical History
Newcastle Breweries Ltd was registered in February 1890 as a limited liability company to acquire the businesses of J Barras & Co Ltd, Tyne Brewery, Newcastle–upon–Tyne, England; William Henry Allison & Co, High Brewery, North Shields, England (closed 1925); James, John & William Henry Allison, Monkwearmouth Brewery, Sunderland, England; Swinburne & Co, Gateshead, England; and Carr Brothers & Carr, Low Lights, North Shields, England, and 215 licensed houses, at a purchase price of GBP 606,296. During 1896 the company acquired, by lease from Northern Breweries Corporation Ltd, freehold licensed houses formerly owned by James Routledge. It also took over John Sanderson & Sons, Haymarket Brewery, Newcastle–upon–Tyne, in 1898; Fosters' Bishop Middleham Brewery Ltd, Bishop Middleham, Durham, England, in 1910; Addison, Potter & Son, The Maltings, Newcastle–upon–Tyne, in 1918; Matthew Wood & Son Ltd, Market Place Brewery, South Shields, England, in 1919; Northern Corporation Ltd in 1955; Steel, Coulson & Co Ltd's, Duddingston Brewery, Craigmillar, Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1954 (closed 1961); James Deuchar Ltd, Lochside Brewery, Montrose, Scotland, in 1956; and John Rowell & Son Ltd, New Brewery, Gateshead, England, in 1959. The Company merged in 1960 with Scottish Brewers Ltd, Abbey Brewery, Edinburgh, to form Scottish & Newcastle Breweries Ltd. Brewing continues at the Tyne Brewery. Newcastle Breweries Ltd was still in existence as a dormant company in 2002.
