Administrative / Biographical History

Margaret Stewart Johnson was born Margaret Stewart Michie on 23rd April 1927  . In 1944  she began an Arts course at the University of Glasgow studying History, Spanish and Botany. At this time she moved from her home in Gourock to live in Robertson Hall. During her first year she received a bursary from a fund which had been set-up for the sons and daughters of clergy. During her second year of study, 1945-1946  , she returned home. Her classes for this year were Ordinary History, Political Economy and Ordinary Spanish. The following year she matriculated for exams only, however, she never completed her degree.

John Stewart Stewart attended the University of Glasgow from 1912-1914  . This included a summer session in 1912 prior to his entering first year. A student of medicine, he studied Physics and Botany as part of his summer course, Chemistry and Zoology in his first year and Physiology and Anatomy during his second year. During his second year, 1913-1914  , John Stewart Stewart joined the OTC (Officer Training Corps) and also moved to a residence in Willowbank Crescent, Glasgow from his home in Gourock. In November 1914  he joined the 1/5th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, serving as a 2nd Lieutenant. However, he was wounded at Gallipoli and died in hospital on 15th July 1915  .
