Jotters: Fourier series, lectures on heat, 1908-1909

John Noble was born on the 3 March 1888 in Dumfries. His father was Joseph Noble, a Sheriff Officer. He matriculated into the arts faculty in 1905 and completed both an MA and a BSC in his time at the university. In his first year he studied Latin and Mathematics, coming third in the graduating classes (12 o’clock class) in Mathematics. In 1906-1907 he studied Moral Philosophy and Natural Philosophy and then in 1907-1908 he took Education and Mathematics. In 1908-1909 he studied Advanced Honours Mathematics and Higher Natural Philosophy. He did not matriculate in 1909/10 or in 1910/11. In 1911-12 he took Chemistry Laboratory, and Physical Laboratory, Advanced Honours Mathematics and Higher Natural Philosophy. In 1912-1913 he took Honours Mathematics and Natural Philosophy and also Astronomy. He was awarded a 2nd class certificate in Astronomy and a 1st class certificate in Advanced Physical Laboratory. He graduated on 22 Nov 1913 with an MA Hons in Mathematics and Natural Philosophy and a BSc, in Pure Science.

John completed a one-year postgraduate course of teacher training at the Glasgow Provincial Training College on the 1st August 1914, gaining the Teacher’s General Certificate, which qualified him to teach in primary schools. He was appointed to a post at Henderson Street Public School in Glasgow from the 1st September 1914. John served with the 5th Battalion of the Cameron Highlanders during WW1 and was attached to the 9th Battalion, Machine Gun Corps. He married Agnes Mcleod on 13th December 1917 in Kirkmahoe, Dumfriesshire, presumably whilst on leave. He died, aged 30, on the 28th September 1918 and is buried in Ypres Town Cemetery Extension, Belgium.
