The Newcomers' Section

The expansion of Glasgow University in the early 1960s brought in a number of members who were new to Glasgow but this caused some problems with overcrowding at meetings of the Ladies' Club . It was decided to establish a Newcomers' Section of the Ladies' Club to address both of these issues. The purpose was still to facilitate socialising between women members of staff and wives of members of staff, but the Newcomers' Section aimed to provide evenings with entertainment aimed at women new to the area, such as talks on Glasgow history, and excursions in the local area. Membership of the Newcomers' Section was allowed for three years only, at which stage the member would move on to the Ladies' Club proper. Newcomers could also attend meetings of the main club if they wished. In 1964 the Newcomers' Section set up a babysitting scheme to help young couples who were new to Glasgow and did not have anyone to babysit. By 1966 a household equipment loan scheme for prams, cots and high chairs was established and stalls selling second-hand children's clothes were popular at meetings. The Newcomers' club was brought to an end in 1972 due to dwindling numbers at the meetings, and members attended the meetings of the main Club.
