Margaret Muriel Gray was born in Helensburgh, Scotland on 2nd April 1879 , the daughter of George William Gray, a shipbroker. She studied at the University of Glasgow from 1903 and graduated with a first class MA Honours degree in 1907 . She attended classes in Mathematics and Logic in 1903-1904, History, English Literature & Language in 1904-1905, Latin and Honours English in 1905-1906, and Honours English and British History in 1906-1907. She was appointed an assistant to the English class at Queen Margaret College [QMC] in 1909 . In 1910-1911 she was a 4th assistant at the QMC to the professor of English language and literature. She continued as an assistant until 1921 when she was appointed lecturer to the Department of English Language and Literature. She retired in 1947 . Her research interests were mainly in the medieval period and she contributed articles to The Times Literary Supplement. She edited Scottish Poetry from Barbour to James V1 and also edited Lancelot of the Laik for the Scottish Text Society. She died in 1957 .
