Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The Govan Rope & Sail Co, rope makers, Govan, Glasgow, Scotland, was formed in 1889. The company became known as Govan Ropeworks Co Ltd and in 1918 the company was purchased by the Gourock Ropeworks Co Ltd, Port Glasgow, Invercyde, Scotland, and traded as a subsidiary company, producing rope, cordage and fishing line. The Govan Ropeworks appears to have been liquidated in the late 1940s but the plant at Govan continued to produce rope and by 1954 was the largest single rope making unit of the Gourock Ropeworks Co Ltd. The Gourock Ropework Co Ltd became part of Bridon Ropes Ltd in 1970 when it was taken over by Bridon Fibres & Plastics Ltd.
