Administrative / Biographical History
The English Sewing Cotton Co Ltd was formed in 1897 following the amalgamation of 14 thread manufacturers, with the name eventually changed to the English Sewing Company. The company operated around the United Kingdom, with branches in England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.
The company was taken over by the holding company Tootal Ltd in 1963, which was in turn taken over by Coats Viyella in the 1990s. The closure of the Newton Mearns factory followed.
