Isabel Jean Templeton Wilson was born in Kilwinning in 1921 . Isabel attended the University of Glasgow from 1938-1941 , taking classes in Latin, Mathematics and German in her first year, German (Higher), Moral Philosophy (Ordinary) and English (Ordinary) in her second, and English (Higher Ordinary) and Education (Ordinary) in her third and final year. She graduated with an MA in June 1941 and subsequently became a teacher in Killwinning, Ayrshire. She returned to the University of Glasgow from 1952-1954 , taking classes in History and Constitutional History in her first year and History and Scottish History and Literature in her second and final year. She was jointly awarded the George Neilson Prize and came joint second in her Scottish History and Literature (Ordinary) examination in 1953. She graduated with postgraduate second class honours in History in 1954 and returned to her teaching career.
