Administrative / Biographical History
Samuel Heron was born in Greenock on 5th June 1930 . His father, also Samuel, was a rivetter. Samuel attended St. Mary's Elementary College and St Columba's High School, in Greenock. He came to the University of Glasgow in 1948 and began studying Pure Science, which included Botany, Maths and Natural Philosophy. In his second year he studied Maths (Higher), Natural Philosophy (Higher) and Astronomy (Ordinary). For his third year he studied Maths III and Natural Philosophy III. He studied Natural Philosophy IV in his fourth year and graduated B.Sc in 1952 . In the same year he began a PhD, studying Pure Science. He was still a research student at the university when he unfortunately lost his life in a climbing accident on the 5th of January 1954 . A library based in the Natural Philosophy Department within the University of Glasgow was inaugurated as a memorial to Samuel Heron. This library closed when the departmental building was refurbished in the early 1990s. The books from the library were given to the Glasgow University Physical Society , which is still in existence (2007).

Custodial History
Previously kept within the department of Natural Philosophy at the University of Glasgow. It was then transferred to the Hunterian Museum, before deposit at GUAS.
